The result of teamwork and a little friendly competition! Ms Iman (3rd from left) and APU student volunteers with the children from Suriana Welfare Society, proudly displaying their impressive paperclip chains.

Since 2010, Suriana Welfare Society, a dedicated NGO nestled in Jalan Selangor, Petaling Jaya, has stood as a pillar of support for underprivileged communities. At the heart of its mission lies the belief that every child—regardless of background—deserves access to education and opportunities to grow.

In alignment with this vision, the School of Foundation Studies (SoF) at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) has been actively conducting a series of enriching educational sessions for children under the Society’s care.

Creative Learning with a Purpose

On 13th June 2025, SoF held its fifth session with the children at Suriana. Under the guidance of lecturer Ms Iman Danish Sha, a passionate group of 20 APU student volunteers brought with them a unique STEM challenge that fused creativity, collaboration and a whole lot of fun.

The children at Suriana Welfare Society constructed the longest possible chain using only paperclips—an activity that tested a multitude of skills, from critical thinking and coordination to communication and strategic planning.

The task given to the children was to construct the longest possible chain using only paperclips—within a set time and limited materials. Though simple in concept, this hands-on activity tested a multitude of skills, from critical thinking and coordination to communication and strategic planning.

A Buzz of Excitement and Achievement

With the support of Ms Iman and APU student volunteers, the children at Suriana Welfare Society huddled together, rapidly exchanging ideas and experimenting with different techniques.

As the countdown began, the room burst into a hive of energy and determination. Teams huddled together, rapidly exchanging ideas, experimenting with techniques, and encouraging one another.

The competition was friendly but fierce—cheers, laughter and gasps of surprise filled the air as chains grew longer and longer.

By the end of the timed challenge, the longest paperclip chain reached a stunning 326 cm, drawing applause and wide-eyed amazement from everyone in the room.

“It was amazing to see how determined and focused the children were, and how proud they felt when they measured their final product,” shared Ms Iman.

Gifts, Giggles, and Gratitude

Surprise gifts and treats from the generous APU student volunteers not only lifted the children's spirits but also created lasting memories through kindness and care.

The day didn’t end with the competition. In a heartwarming gesture, one of the APU student volunteers unveiled surprise gifts and treats for all the children.

Their joyful reactions and grateful smiles said it all—it wasn’t just an afternoon of learning, but a memory made sweeter through kindness and care.

Empowering the Marginalised Through Education

The children enhanced their STEM knowledge through fun and interactive learning sessions facilitated by APU’s student volunteers.

This initiative is more than just a classroom activity—it reflects a deep commitment to inclusive education and social impact.

Through fun and interactive learning, the children not only enhanced their STEM knowledge but also cultivated soft skills like teamwork, resilience, and planning.

“We’re incredibly proud of their efforts and can’t wait to return for the next session filled with even more learning and laughter!” beamed Ms Iman, whose tireless efforts have been instrumental in advancing this initiative.

This CSR outreach by APU supports UN Sustainable Development Goals—SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities)—demonstrating how community collaboration can create meaningful change, one paperclip at a time.
