In support of the 2025 World Mental Health Day theme, ‘Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies’, the Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) rolled out a series of meaningful initiatives designed to highlight the importance of mental health support during crises.

Through workshops and health-care services, APU reinforced its commitment to safeguarding students’ well-being, particularly in times of uncertainty.

The centrepiece of the observance was a workshop titled ‘Well-Being Workshop: Psychological First Aid during Crisis’, conducted by Ms Grace Chan, a registered Counsellor from Kintsugi Cares Mental Health.

“As crises increase worldwide, so does the need for accessible, culturally sensitive, and timely mental health care,” said Grace, added “Our goal is to empower students to overcome barriers to care and build supportive communities that prioritise mental health for all.”

The session explored the psychological impact of large-scale emergencies such as natural disasters, pandemics, and conflicts, and examined the common barriers that prevent individuals from accessing crucial mental health services.

Key conditions including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and compassion fatigue were discussed, with a particular focus on vulnerable groups such as displaced communities, frontline workers, and students living away from their families.

Participants also learned practical strategies for emotional regulation, peer support, and navigating mental health resources during emergencies.

One of the attendees, Foundation in Engineering student Loh Zhi Chien, shared that the workshop gave him knowledge on Psychological First Aid (PFA) during a crisis, which he found very helpful.

A steady stream of students visited the PT Foundation booth to gain insights into the foundation’s outreach programs and resources.

“With these skills, I feel more prepared to manage a crisis calmly and assist others. I encourage more students to attend events like this to build awareness and take care of their mental health.”

To complement the mental health focus, APU collaborated with the PT Foundation to offer free HIV and STI screenings on campus, an essential service that highlights the crucial link between physical health and mental well-being.

According to Mr Ano Tong, Programme Manager at PT Foundation, this is their second year of collaboration and presence at APU, aimed not only at promoting awareness and preventive care but also at destigmatising HIV and STI testing.

PT Foundation encourages the APU community to prioritise both their physical and mental health within a supportive environment because conditions such as HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can carry significant psychological burdens, as stigma, fear, and anxiety.

“Diagnosis or treatment often contributes to depression, social isolation, and diminished self-esteem. Early screening helps ensure timely medical care, reducing health risks while also easing psychological distress.”

Supporting holistic student development, the Counselling Team also organised a Career Exploration and Personality Test session.

This activity helped participants discover their strengths, understand their career preferences, and incorporate mental wellness principles into their personal and professional growth.

World Mental Health Day 2025 underscores the need for accessible mental health support, especially during emergencies, as APU’s continued focus on improving access to care helps build a supportive, resilient campus community and reinforces its commitment to student well-being.
