Three students from Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU)Ryan Tan Teng Wei, Yeo Wen Le and Kelly Teo Yao — were proudly selected by Majlis Sukan IPTS Malaysia (MASISWA) to represent the council at the prestigious Sukan Institusi Pendidikan Malaysia (SIPMA) 2025

Ryan and Yeo played in the Men’s Volleyball team, while Kelly competed in women swimming events.

Majlis Sukan IPTS Malaysia (MASISWA), the sports council for private higher education institutions in Malaysia, took part in the 2025 edition of SIPMA, held from 1st to 7th September at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in Skudai, Johor.

The event brought together eight sports councils — Majlis Sukan Universiti Malaysia (MASUM), Majlis Sukan Sekolah Malaysia (MSSM), MASISWA, Majlis Sukan Politeknik Malaysia (MSP), Majlis Sukan Institut Pendidikan Guru Malaysia (MSIPGM), Majlis Sukan Matrikulasi Malaysia (MSMM), Majlis Sukan Kolej Komuniti Malaysia (MASKOM), and Majlis Sukan Kolej Vokasional Malaysia (MASKoV).

SIPMA, a biennial sports festival that provides a platform for student-athletes from both public and private institutions to showcase their talents and foster unity, is part of a wider collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE).

The 2025 games featured ten sports disciplines: swimming, badminton, football, tenpin bowling, athletics, hockey, netball, sepak takraw, archery, and volleyball — with a total of 121 gold medals up for grabs.

MASISWA fielded a strong contingent of 199 athletes and 59 officials, determined to improve on their third-place finish at SIPMA 2023, where they secured 77 medals.

At SIPMA 2025, the MASISWA team once again clinched third place, bringing home an impressive haul of 32 gold, 33 silver, and 24 bronze medals.

Among the top contributors were the three APU students. Ryan Tan Teng Wei, Yeo Wen Le and Kelly Teo Yao played key roles in MASISWA’s Men’s Volleyball and Women’s Swimming team, which triumphed as overall champions.

“This is a great honour for us to contribute to the MASISWA Men’s Volleyball team,” said Ryan

“Winning this gold medal is the best reward for all the hard work and training we put in.”

His teammate Wen Le added, “This success was beyond our expectations. Our team gave their all, and this gold medal is something we have long awaited.”

Meanwhile, Kelly Teo Yao shone in the swimming events, securing three gold medals in the 400m IM, 200m IM, and 4x100m IM relay, along with a silver in the 4x200m freestyle relay for MASISWA.

“This is my second time participating in SIPMA; my first was back in 2019,” Kelly shared.

“I focused on enjoying the competition and learning about race strategy. I started out too fast in my first 50 metres and faded towards the end — a valuable lesson in pacing and energy management that I could only truly understand by competing.”

Kelly praised the overall spirit of the event, “The competition was excellent. Although I did not swim my absolute best, I am excited to return to training. SIPMA emphasises team spirit, highlighting how individual efforts contribute to a collective goal — a skill that directly applies to academic teamwork as well.”

She continued, “The experience exceeded my expectations. I thought I would just swim my races, but the sportsmanship, the thrill of being part of a team, and learning from other elite swimmers was an unexpected bonus that added tremendous value.”

Looking ahead, Kelly will attend a training camp in Thailand from 15th to 25th September 2025 in preparation for the Asian Championships, scheduled from 25th September to 2nd October 2025.
